Final Culminative Assignment PT2

 

Artist Statement - Jordan Bates

In this course we did a lot of different types of projects, such as Image manipulation, stop motion, composition for photographs, Animation, Video, Careers in Media arts, and photography. Each project I did in this course taught me a new skill or lesson in Media arts and about life. Some of my favorite pieces I did in this course was Image manipulation, specifically the Amber 6 project where we were given a photo of a young girl and had to make a small grid of 6 photos of the girl. We had to make each of the 6 photos different from one another, for example, if I had one photo where the colors were inverted, I couldn’t do only inverted colors again, I had to also add another design to it such as a shadow or inverted version of the girl. I really enjoyed this project in particular because it opened up my creative side more and really made me think of different designs and concepts to do. Another assignment we did I really enjoyed was the stop motion assignment, specifically the 2D and introduction to stop motion. I enjoyed these two a lot because I loved playing around with my imagination and seeing the end result of my work of hundreds of photos turn into a video. I also really liked the stop motion projects because when I was younger a lot of the shows, I have watched had stop motion in them.

How I did my artwork, and my process for them was very normal. For example, on my time-lapse project, all I did was brainstorm Ideas of where to shoot and what time to shoot at. I decide to pick a window beside my work area to record and it was morning time when I shot. My process is like this because I find it more organized and easier for me to complete projects and work. Some of the software I use for my projects are Gimp, Open shot, Stop motion app, voice memos app, and my cellphone. Some techniques and processes I learned from this software are the ability to get stabilized and take clean photos, as well as how to edit, create, and design videos and stop motion. The biggest challenges I had with these programs were when I first started using them, I didn’t know how to use them and had difficulty using them. I solved these problems by trial and error and having help from my teacher.

There were some ideas behind the Media artworks I did this term for example, with my final project my poster was created because of my ideas on equality and how I stand for equality, another piece that I created using my ideas was my hobby project where I choose to use fishing to help me create that piece.

My goals as a Media artist were to try my best and give it my all in every project I did. My artwork and my class helped me reach my goals this course, with my artwork I believe I tried my best to get the best piece possible and my class helped a lot when I was stuck or had a challenge that I needed help on.

What I learned this term that I thought was a surprise was learning how to edit videos and photos. Something I learned this term that was a challenge was photography as it was very hard at first but I soon got the hang of it. Some things I learned that were successes and failures were the photography assignments as some of them were successful and some came out as a failure. With those failed assignments I didn’t think they would come out like that and if I did it again I would try harder and use different techniques.
